Water Week 2025 — Storytelling for social change

Ian

Water Week 2025 is more than just a school campaign — it’s a groundbreaking new initiative that harnesses the power of storytelling and entertainment to inspire environmental action, with support from The Wombles, Cartoon Network, and The Waterubas.

“We believe in the power of entertainment for social change — to give children the confidence, motivation and tools to become the next generation of water conservationists.”
— Katy Newnham, Founder of Wastebuster

"We hope the Waterubas will inspire children to love water so much that when they're faced with an evolving hydrosphere, they'll be galvanised to take on any challenges with understanding, love and respect rather than fear and greed."
Jocelyn Stevenson, Creator of The Waterubas

At the heart of Water Week is the mission to inform, inspire and empower young people to understand and act on one of the biggest environmental challenges of our time — to protect water and safeguard clean and safe water for all.

Stories help make complex issues relatable and understandable. That’s why Water Week brings together films, animations, documentaries, books, talks and more — all carefully curated in our Water Week Education Resource Directory. The aim? To spark curiosity, foster empathy, and empower young people to take meaningful action.

We’re thrilled to have teamed up with Cartoon Network Climate Champions for the Water Week Challenge - ten fun, practical challenges that young people can take on at home or school to help save water and protect waterways — from reducing shower time to clearing local litter.

And we’re excited to introduce schools to The Waterubas from BAFTA-winning children’s TV creator Jocelyn Stevenson. The Waterubas is a magical new storybook adventure that whisks young readers into a watery world filled with 81 astonishing beings who may just hold the future of our planet in their ancient, splashy hands.

As one of Water Week’s founding partners, The Wombles continue their legacy of environmental storytelling that stretches back to 1968. As Great Uncle Bulgaria puts it: “We believe the art of storytelling is a powerful tool to empower, educate and bring together local communities for the power of good. Water is important to us all — so let’s ensure we protect it.”
