No Electricity Day

Emily

Could you go without power for a day?

We’d like to challenge your school to spend just one day without electricity during Switch Off Fortnight (20 November – 3 December).

A No Electricity Day, is a fun and practical way to help young people understand how dependent we all are on electricity and how important it is to use it efficiently.

Ideas for holding a No Electricity Day

  • Hold a non-uniform day and tell students to come dressed in their brightest clothes to stand out, like St Stephen's Kearsley Moor CE Primary School.
  • Encourage children’s creativity by getting them to think of how they would spend their evening and weekends, without power (or mobile phones!) – perhaps get them to write an imaginary diary of how they think it would feel.
  • Switch off interactive whiteboards and computers, and use books and old-fashioned board games instead.
  • Try creating your own power! Students from Allenbourn Middle School will be testing their own wind turbines during Switch Off Fortnight.
  • Compare a typical day’s electricity use with No Electricity Day to see what you've saved.
  • Raise money for the school – why not encourage children to go a whole week without using electronic items and get sponsored for their efforts – you could use our downloadable certificates to recognise their success.

Don’t forget to post a blog on the Pod about your experience of No Electricity Day

If you haven’t already done so, it’s not too late to sign up for Switch Off Fortnight and join thousands of teachers and students in taking part.

We still have some free energy-saving learning packs left containing keyrings, stickers, posters and certificates – so don’t delay, sign up today.

PLUS you’ll be entered into a free prize draw to win a model renewable energy kit.*
