1. Check lights are safe before putting them on the Christmas tree

2. Don't leave burning candles unattended. Blow them out before going to bed

3. Christmas novelties are not toys and don't have to meet toy safety standards. Place them high on the tree out of reach

4. Buy children's gifts for the right age group and check they meet safety standards

5. Don't drink and drive

6. Falls are the most common accident, so keep clutter off the stairs

7. Keep dogs on leads near frozen water. Don't follow them on to the ice

8. Buy batteries for toys that need them - don't take them out of smoke alarms

9. Keep children out of the kitchen at busy times

10. Received electrical or gadget gifts? Always read the instructions

11. Have scissors handy to open packaging, don't use a knife

12. Look out for small items that could be a choking hazard to young children, like button batteries and burst balloons.

Stay safe and have a Merry Christmas.
